On Thursday, CSKA will start back-to-back Europa League campaigns away to the Austrian Wolfsberg. Of course, the Muscovites dreamed to start in the Champions League, but due to a poor end to last season’s RPL, dropped down to the second-tier European competition. Last season was a disaster for the Army Men, finishing last in a poor group. This must be avoided at all costs.
As well as one year ago, the Army Men are just one point off the RPL summit, and as usual, they have problems due to injuries. The match against Wolfsberg will be the second for CSKA in a series of seven games in just 21 days.
At the end of last season, Viktor Goncharenko switched from his favoured back-three to a 4-2-3-1 formation. He will for sure line his side up in this again on Thursday, largely due to a lack of fit & available central defenders. Traditionally CSKA orients their attacks down the right flank, through Mario Fernandes at right-back, but he received a questionable COVID-19 test and is quarantined – though CSKA CEO Roman Babaev said that Mario can return later this week. Against Dynamo Moscow at the weekend, Goncharenko used centre-back Viktor Vasin in this role, but after Vadim Karpov’s injury, he moved defensive midfielder Konstantin Maradishvili to this position.
